TemplonAbdelkader Benchamma, Will Cotton, Laurent Grasso, David Huffman, Jitish Kallat, Chris Martin, Mariko Mori, Chiharu Shiota, Toshiko Takaezu, De Wain Valentine Templon New York’s Cosmography group exhibition brings a poetic exploration of the cosmos featuring works by gallery artists Abdelkader Benchamma, Iván Navarro, Jitish Kallat And Chiharu Shiota, along with other artists including Laurent Grasso, Mariko Mori and Toshiko Takaezu. Coming from the same generation but from three different continents (Europe, America and Asia), these artists have in common a subject of fascination that has spanned the ages and cultures: the universe. Cosmography, the scientific study of mapping the general features of the universe, is a field which incorporates geology, geography, and astronomy. While differing in technique and medium, these artists stretch the limits of science and belief through interdisciplinary examinations of mythology, history, and mathematics. Wielding their intervention on the macro as they name, map, and record large-scale phenomena, the artists lay forward humanity’s attempts to apprehend the infinite. Webbed surfaces, geological strata, and explosive nebulae mimic the undulating energies and mysteries of the celestial world, yet equally parallel human networks; blood vessels, sacred geometries, and invisible connections of shared memory materialize the cosmos within a micro universe.These metaphysical works contemplate our relationship to the intangible structures that bind our universe and equally suggest an internal, perhaps spiritual, study of the worlds within us.
