Guy Patton
KinmanGuy Patton (b. 1980) lives and works in London. For his inaugural solo exhibition at Kinman, Patton has produced a new series of paintings that explore notions of excavation, exposure and transparency. Patton has adapted a visual language that’s as much to do with the notion of eradication as it is with application; working in numerous layers of acrylic paint, glue and teflon, Patton celebrates the principal of spontaneity by peeling and tearing paint away from the surface of the canvas, exposing layers beneath and allowing chance to determine the composition and aesthetic of his work. To further establish his exploration into these traits, Patton has extended his thinking beyond the limitations of a canvas; in the week preceding the exhibition, Patton produced a large scale work within the gallery, exposing the residue of his process, which is evident upon the gallery walls and floor. Invested in both impulse and process, Patton’s paintings evoke a sense of clarity and embrace the nature of the incidental.
