It is at a talk he gave at Maison Édouard Glissant, across from Diamond Rock in the Caribbean Sea, that the project devised by Julien Creuzet for the French Pavilion at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia first saw the light. The title of each of Julien Creuzet’s works and exhibitions is a poem. This mode of address, a long way from the norms of museum design, press releases and cartels, is one that the artist has cultivated since his beginnings. Once again, it conveys an invitation to intense experience and to interpretative freedom and diversity. In this poem, with its places, colours, movements, sounds, rhythms, textures, luminosities, obscurities, landscapes, mythologies, disasters and emotions… Julien Creuzet’s sonic and chromatic grammar resonates in its entirety. For Biennale Arte 2024, Julien Creuzet transforms the French Pavilion and invites visitors into a space irrigated with fluids in which a radical and collective imaginary opens up, populated with divine presences, and connected to Venice by its water. “What I want to offer visitors to this this Pavilion is a complex and sensory zone of confluence, a deeply lived experience. For me, that is what this space is about. It is a crossway, a place where anything may be encountered, above all oneself.” —Julien Creuzet Born in 1986 in Blanc-Mesnil, Julien Creuzet spent his childhood in Martinique, and currently lives and works in Montreuil. He trained at the ÉSAM in Caen, the ENSBA in Lyon, and at Le Fresnoy in Tourcoing. His work combines sculpture, music, video and poetry in installations that have often been described as archipelagos. His ambitious body of work, which overlaps narratives, marginalised histories, legacies and materials, has gained international recognition. His work has recently been the subject of solo exhibitions at LUMA Westbau (2023) and LUMA Arles (2022), at the Palais de Tokyo (2019), and at the Pernod-Ricard Foundation (2018). He is the winner of the Étant Donnés 2022 prize organised by the Villa Albertine and the Committee Professionnel des Galeries d'Art, the BMW Art Journey 2021 Prize and was nominated for the 2021 Marcel Duchamp Prize. He is represented by the galleries High Art (Paris), Andrew Kreps Gallery (New York) and Document (Chicago). He is also head of the sculpture studio at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
