Formalism of Pirates
Instituto de VisiónFormalism of Pirates is an exhibition that emerges from in-depth research into the record label Discos Melser, which, between 1970 and 1975, engaged in simulation and piracy, culturally influencing countries throughout the region, particularly Colombia. Melser successfully produced and distributed unlicensed records until the death of its owner. Despite the company's actions defrauding the vinyl industry, its records remain relevant, and their collectible value continues to increase. Through the musical history of the region, Diaz draws parallels between cultural products, the construction of national identity, and how intimate relationships are affected by mass consumption. Wilson Díaz is a pivotal figure in the recent history of Latin American art, who, over several decades of work as an artist, educator, and cultural activist, has set a precedent in the visual arts of the region. Born in Pitalito, Colombia, an area plagued by political violence and drug trafficking, Diaz has developed a way to digest the universally shared urgencies typical of postcolonial societies. For this reason, although his narratives usually originate from very particular micro-stories, the character of his work achieves a global resonance.
