Bernd Koberling
Rooted in Time, Rooted in the Sky, Paintings 1992-2026
Buchmann GalerieBuchmann Galerie is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Bernd Koberling. A key figure of German postwar art, Koberling first gained international recognition in the 1980s with works of expressive rigour driven by the idea of the "re-creation of an image out of the force of lived experience and the seen." His practice has since evolved into a profound exploration of painting as a field of tension between material, color, and form, deeply shaped by landscape and decades of engagement with nature in places like Iceland, Scotland and Lapland. Works with evocative titles such as Moosheidegestein (moss heath stone), position nature as a poetic metaphor for the human condition, unfolding a visual language of striking intensity and renewal. The exhibition features, alongside large-format canvas works from the years 1992 to 2026, an extensive series of watercolors characterized by intense coloration, broad gestural actions, and consistent abstraction.
