For her second solo show at the gallery, Tamara Zahaykevich continues to make wall-reliant and free-standing constructions, fashioned from low-end, paper-related materials culled from the artist’s studio and surrounding areas. For years, Tamara Zahaykevich’s work has teetered between fallibility and accomplishment while striving to transform the pitifiul into the sublime. Generated with decidedly low-tech methods and comprised with Styrofoam, foam board, found paper, paint and ink, the work has a narrow material agenda with a wide formal reach. With simple gestures and technical approached such as spraying, carving, drawing, building, and subtracting - and often complicated structural solutions - the artist achieves unsuspecting compositional pairings that overlay painting strategies with sculptural techniques. Shape and imagery reveal a personal inventory of experiences that can allude to an unwritten narrative in the work. Zahaykevich manipulates and transforms the physical vulnerability of her material into a new way of objecthood that speaks just as much to the elemental tenants of formalism as it does to the urge for maximizing an aesthetic presence in the work and the physical space it inhabits. Her impressions combine the architectural and the innate in order to reintroduce the day’s detritus into dialogue. Tamara Zahaykevich was born in Livingston, NJ and received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art in 1995. She has had solo exhibitions at Bellwether Gallery, New York; Arena, New York and Gist Galerie, Amsterdam. Her work has been seen in such venues as Alexander and Bonin, New York; ICA, Boston; Feature Inc., New York; Tony Wright Gallery, Chicago; New Britain Museum of American Art, CT; Essl Museum, Vienna and Galerie Les Filles Du Calvaire, Paris among many others.
