This exhibition celebrates the depth of technical skill and conceptual rigor that define the Academy’s teaching philosophy. From nearly 500 submissions, 76 works were selected by a distinguished jury of gallerists representing some of the most influential voices in New York’s downtown art scene: David Fierman (Fierman Gallery), Jackie Klempay (Situations), and Isaac Lyles (Lyles & King). Their selections reflect the Academy’s core values—mastery of technique, bold artistic vision, and an innovative approach to figurative or representational work. The exhibition unfolds across a spectrum of media—oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, sculpture, and collage—offering works that range from intimate to boldly monumental in scale, the depth and variety reflecting the unique perspective shaped by each artist’s experience at the Academy. The result is a dynamic and cohesive exhibition featuring paintings, drawings, and sculpture that exemplify the Academy’s belief in classical training as a foundation for contemporary practice. Each artwork on view demonstrates how disciplined skill can foster innovation and personal expression. Founded in 1982 by artists, scholars, and patrons including Andy Warhol, the New York Academy of Art is a nonprofit educational and cultural institution committed to fostering a new generation of artists fluent in traditional methods and empowered to create vital contemporary art. Through its MFA program, public lectures, and exhibitions, the Academy serves as a hub for dialogue, excellence, and exploration in the visual arts.
