The Grid and the Gaze
Andréhn-SchiptjenkoAndréhn-Schiptjenko has the pleasure of presenting Matts Leiderstam's solo exhibition, The Grid and the Gaze. For more than three decades, Matts Leiderstam (b. 1956) occupies a singular position in contemporary art. Through an unwavering and conceptually rigorous engagement with art history, modes of display, and the act of looking, he has developed one of the most rigorous and distinctive artistic practices in Scandinavia. Situated at the intersection of painting, research, and institutional critique, his work unfolds as a sustained investigation into the structures that shape how we see and understand images. Matts Leiderstam, born 1956, lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2025-26, Leiderstam presented the extensive solo exhibition The Sun Picture – Matts Leiderstam, Prince Eugen’s Altarpiece and the Move of Kiruna Church. The research-based exhibition was first presented at Kin Museum of Contemporary Art in Kiruna, Sweden, and later travelled to Prince Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, Stockholm, Sweden. Selected solo exhibitions include: Konstakademien, Stockholm (2022), Wilfried Lentz, Rotterdam (2017), Collectors Space, Istanbul (2016), Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and Grazer Kunstverein, Graz (2010).
