Love Sign
Noah KlinkGina Fischli, Lenard Giller, Isaac Lythgoe, Eric N. Mack, Willa Nasatir, Kayode Ojo, Johannes Oswald, Colin De Land and Kembra Pfahler, Alison Yip Love Sign is an exhibition around a 200GB digital database of Prince fan ephemera, bootlegs, discography and imagery. The files were compiled by Prince fans in and around Hamburg over years and passed on to friends and strangers at bars and clubs via a USB stick, engraved with a S. Being a loosely organised structure of folders, sub-folders and endless streams of music, imagery and videos, the medium appears to be an open database rather than a completed and not-to-be-changed archive. Parts of it go beyond compiled primary material and open up to personal discourses on who and what Prince was in the contexts of pop music, Afro-American identity, the mass media industry, and more. The exhibition takes this opportunity and brings together works that are linked to or based on Prince, his wide-ranging work and the particular database. Parts of the database are available online, as well as all works shown at the gallery and additional music files and documents.
