Artifact as Memory Archive
UnderdonkOsamu Kobayash Elisa Lendvay Christina Tenaglia Underdonk is pleased to present a three-person show with Elisa Lendvay, Christina Tenaglia, and Osamu Kobayashi. Memories need a place to rest and a repository that can make them accessible and tangible beyond the person in whom they are located. For the works in this show, memory resides in objects, patterns, and gesture. Artifacts are the remnants of memories crafted to both receive and also to transmit experience. In sculpture, object installations, and paintings, we experience the spaces in which memories gather and are collected in deeply tactile ways through the artists’ process of making. We the viewers find our own memory associations in the openness of these artworks. The memories that are transmuted also become artifacts that can be discovered and recovered. The objects become artifacts, akin to a vessel which holds the memory of the artists’ original intention; The artists in this show collect artifacts to forge a new and ever-changing archive. Taken together, they invite us to see and follow not only the texture of the sweeping movements but also to assemble these experiences together. Elisa Lendvay (b. 1975, Dallas, TX) is a multidisciplinary artist living in New York. Her work spans media from object making, sculpture, drawing, painting, installation, photography, writing, music and collaborative performance. In interplays of exploratory process, she employs color, line, shape and form with diverse materials to merge into enigmatic objects bound by physicality. Exploring ideas of internal vision, observation of nature and corporeality, the works are illuminated by moments of play and discovery. She received an MFA from The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, and a BFA from The University of Texas at Austin, and Bennington College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including NYC spaces: Sargent’s Daughters Gallery; The Drawing Center; Underdonk; Klaus Von Nichtaggend Gallery; Jason McCoy Gallery; and PS21 Center for Contemporary Performance, Chatham, NY, Ratio 3 Gallery, San Francisco, The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, New Paltz, NY, the Albany International Airport, and the Beatrice M. Haggerty Gallery at the University of Dallas, and Form+Concept, Santa Fe. Her work has been included in Art Forum (Critic’s picks), The New York Times Style Magazine, Time Out NY, Two Coats of Paint, and the Huffington Post. She is the recipient of awards and residencies including Interlude, Edward Albee Fellowship, Santa Fe Art Institute, Vermont Studio Center, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Swing Space Residency, The Dallas Museum of Art’s Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Award and the Dallas Museum of Art’s DeGolyer Award. Christina Tenaglia (b. 1975, Philadelphia, PA) is an artist and educator living and working in the Hudson Valley. She has received fellowships for residencies at The MacDowell Colony, I-Park, and Catwalk and is a recipient of the W.K. Rose Fellowship in the Creative Arts, a NJ State Arts Council Fellowship Award for Sculpture, and a purchase award grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions including Thomas Park Gallery, New York and Seoul; the Al Held Foundation, Boiceville, NY with River Valley Arts Collective; NADA x Foreland, Catskill, NY with Heroes Gallery; Pamela Salisbury Gallery, Hudson, NY; Hesse Flatow, NY; LABspace, Hillsdale, NY; Opalka Gallery, Albany; NY; Teffia Primary, Tokyo, Japan; Fridman Gallery, Beacon, NY; The Samuel Dorsky Museum, New Paltz, NY; Newark Museum, Newark, NJ among others. Her work has been reviewed and profiled in Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, Two Coats of Paint, Chronogram and other publications. Osamu Kobayashi (b. 1984, Columbia, SC) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has exhibited widely in the US and abroad including solo exhibitions at Hollis Taggart Gallery (New York, NY), Mindy Solomon Gallery (Miami, FL), Beers London (London, United Kingdom), Dirimart (Istanbul, Turkey), and A+B Gallery (Brescia, Italy). He has participated in group exhibitions at Museo d’Arte Contemporanea (Lissone, IT), Albertz Benda (Los Angeles, CA), Blindspot Gallery (Hong Kong, China), and the Columbia Museum of Art (Columbia, SC). In 2013, Kobayashi was awarded the Hassam, Speicher, Betts, and Symons Purchase Fund from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2021, he was awarded a NYFA Artist Fellowship. His work has been reviewed by Artsy, Whitewall Magazine, and Hyperallergic among other publications.
