Irma Hünerfauth

Arcadia Missa is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by German artist Irma Hünerfauth (1907-1998). The exhibition brings together a selection of her celebrated kinetic sculptures, also known as “Vibrationsobjekte" (Vibration Objects) and "Sprechende Kästen" (Speaking Boxes), created between the early 1970s and mid-1980s. Hünerfauth’s works weave together poetic, satirical, and incisive reflections on the social and emotional conditions of modern life — alienation, affection, and desire — while also probing the contradictions of technological progress and the destructive forces it unleashes. Her practice exposes the tensions between human intimacy and mechanised existence, between ideals of advancement and the extractive violence underpinning Western modernity: war, environmental degradation, and extinction. This is Hünerfauth’s second posthumous solo exhibition, following her first, ‘Speaking Boxes’ at Simian, Copenhagen, in 2023. Her works have been exhibited at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, AT (2025); Mudam, Luxembourg, LU (2024); Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, DE (2019); and Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, DE (2018). Hünerfauth's last solo UK presentation was at the Goethe-Institut London in 1983.
