La Loma ProjectsLa Loma Projects is pleased to present its first solo exhibition with Brooklyn-based artist Losel Yauch. At This Hour is Yauch’s examination of grief, depicting it as a kind of gentle companion rather than a beast to be wrestled with. The works in the exhibition detail a single suspended moment in and around an allegorical house from ten isolated perspectives—offering the viewer fragments of context for a story with feeling and meaning, but unaffected by a linear plot. Yauch’s delicate, scenes carry a serenity in their subtle surreality—heavy with an overpowering awareness of someone’s presence and absence all at once, in spaces where it is unclear if someone is just about to arrive or has just departed. Muted palettes of sage, sandstone and dusky pink coalesce with largely monochromatic backgrounds; their stillness helping to convey the ever-changing perception and understanding of our memories. Her soft brushstrokes carefully call attention to delicate shifts in color, tone, and composition. Yauch’s paintings Reading In The Dark, 2024 and Leave a Light On, 2024 articulate subtle yet considered distinctions between the material, the mundane; the intangible and the elusive. Her works are reminiscent both in form and content to the quietly surrealist artists Gertrude Abercrombie and Norbert Schwontkowski. With delicate color work that accentuates the surreal and enigmatic, At This Hour invites the viewer to wait with them for a moment—in settings that don’t communicate a specific time period—focusing on sheer materials and the shape of light as a visual tool to communicate the feeling of loss and examine the presence of absence, fragility of form, and on a broader scale, the concept of grief. Losel Yauch lives and works in New York. She studied her BA in Painting at Central Saint Martins, London. Yauch’s work has been presented in exhibitions at The Rubin Museum, New York; NADA, Miami; Incubator, London and Wells Art Contemporary, Somerset and her works are in numerous private collections internationally. She was recipient of the Central Saint Martins Dean's Award and Saatchi New Futures Graduate Art Prize as well as finalist for the 2023 Ingram Prize.
