NeitherTommaso Corvi-Mora is thrilled to present an exhibition of new work by Anika Roach. As Jennifer Higgie has written in a recent text: “Anika Roach makes paintings that are compellingly enigmatic; as comical as they are disturbing. The characters who inhabit her world might find themselves in situations that allude to grief, loss, violence, confusion and the complications of gender and race but they’re tempered by a nod to the everyday absurdity that each human experiences. Anika tells me: ‘I like an awkwardness, an imperfection: it’s very human.’ She has written that her ‘practice seeks to broaden the existing narratives surrounding the painting of Black people. Challenging the social and political weight that often overwhelms the uniqueness of the Black experience.’ Anika Roach was born in 1996 and earned a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University in 2019. Her work was included in New Contemporaries in 2020.
