Les rêves n’ont pas de titre / Dreams Have No Title

Zineb Sedira will transform the French Pavilion into a cinematographic installation, where the film Les rêves n’ont pas de titre/Dreams Have No Title will immerse visitors into a project with profoundly humanist roots. Starting from the desire for cultural and political activism, which drove the filmmaking of the 1960s and 1970s in France, Italy and in Algeria, the artist will embrace themes imbued with universality, themes that are relevant today, including the fight against discrimination and racism, decolonisation, freedom, solidarity and identity, as well as family. In Venice, city of the Biennale of Art and the Film Festival, Zineb Sedira will focus on the cinema of the 1960 and 1970s, a time when the first co-productions between France, Italy and Algeria appeared, when the latter’s film production was growing – with the support of established French and Italian professionals – fuelled by a desire for international cultural exchange. The new multiform work for the French Pavilion will bear witness to these intellectual and artistic solidarities, which were important parts of the utopias of the 1960s, to question decolonisation, notions of identity, acceptance of the other, memory, and to look at collective and individual history from multiple angles. Zineb Sedira often blends elements from her own life, connecting her family, both by blood and by choice, to reach a universality through her own experiences thanks to her artistic practice. The project for Venice is the chance for Zineb Sedira to create an immersive experience blurring the boundaries between fiction and reality. Zineb Sedira lives in London and works between Algiers, Paris and London. Sedira studied at Central St Martin's School of Art, Slade School of Art, and at the Royal College of Art in London. She is the founder of aria (artist residency in algiers). Sedira was nominated for the Marcel Duchamp prize in 2015 and was awarded the David and Yuko Juda Art Foundation Grant in 2019. She had numerous solo exhibitions in institutions worldwide such as The Photographer’s Gallery (UK); Pori Museum (Finland); Kunsthalle Nikolaj (Denmark); Palais de Tokyo (France); [mac] musée d’Art contemporain (France); Blaffer Art Museum (USA); Prefix and Charles H. Scott Gallery (Canada), Art On the Underground, (London), Beirut Art Center (Lebanon), Sharjah Art Foundation (UAE), Jeu de Paume (France) and IVAM (Spain). Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Tate Britain and Tate Modern (UK), Centre Pompidou and MAC VAL (France), Mori Museum (Japan), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (UK), Musée d’Art Moderne d’Alger (Algeria), Brooklyn Museum (USA), Gwangju Museum of Art, (South Korea), MMK (Germany), Power Plant (Canada), The Smithsonian, Guggenheim Museum and Studio Museum (USA) and Coleção Berardo Museum (Portugal). She also participated in several International Biennials such as the Venice Biennale (Italy), Limerick Biennial (Ireland), ICP Triennial (New York); Sharjah Biennale (UAE), Folkestone Triennial (UK) and Prospect 4 New Orleans (USA). In 2021 and 2022, Zineb Sedira will present her work at SMoCA-Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Dallas Contemporary (USA), Bildmuseet (Sweden), De La Warr Pavilion (UK) and Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (Portugal). Zineb Sedira is represented by the Kamel Mennour (Paris) and The Third Line (Dubai) galleries. Yasmina Reggad is an independent curator, writer and performance artist based in Brussels, Belgium. She holds an MA in Medieval History from the Sorbonne University. She co-funded and is currently the curator of aria (artist residency in Algiers). She previously worked at the Delfina Foundation and Art Dubai Projects. Her research and projects focus on the politics of futurity, investigates alternative systems of knowledge and artistic modes of production, and explores performative methodologies inspired by dance and performance notations. As a curator, Reggad has conceived exhibitions, screenings, performances, educational programmes and talks at international institutions such as Centquatreparis (France), Tate Modern (UK), Institute of Contemporary Arts (UK), Madrassa - l’Atelier de l’observatoire (Morocco), and DJART Biennial (Algeria), and she regularly contributes essays on contemporary art and performance art. As a performance artist, Reggad has recently staged the first two episodes of her project we dreamt of utopia and we woke up screaming at Kaaistudio’s (Belgium), Jeu de Paume (France), Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture (Spain) and Biennale Warszawa (Poland). She is a Fellow 2019-2020 of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program. Yasmina Reggad also works as a dramaturge and has collaborated with choreographer Ioanna Angelopoulou, dancer-choreographer Trajal Harrell and performance artist Carlos Azeredo Mesquita. Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath are Founders of Art Reoriented, a multidisciplinary curatorial platform, launched in New York and Munich in 2009. They are Curators of the Lyon Biennale in 2022, and Affiliate Curators at Gropius Bau in Berlin. They are internationally recognized independent curators and award-winning authors known for their rigorous inter-temporal, trans-cultural, and cross-disciplinary approach. Their curatorial practice is rooted in global contemporary artistic practices, as well as in the field of modernist studies, and they have taught at various universities, including the London School of Economics and New York University. As an independent voice, Bardaouil and Fellrath have collaborated as a duo over the last ten years, engaging with a wide range of institutional models worldwide. Some of their exhibitions include Walking through Walls, Ways of Seeing, Surrealism in Egypt, Mona Hatoum: Turbulence, Dansaekhwa and Korean Abstraction, Staging Film, Tea with Nefertiti, and Told Untold Retold. Their exhibitions have been shown in institutions worldwide such as Centre Pompidou in Paris, Villa Empain in Brussels, Kunstsammlung K20 in Dusseldorf, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Moderna Museet in Stockholm, IVAM in Valencia, Reina Sofia in Madrid, Tate Liverpool, Gwangju and Busan Museums of Art in South Korea, Beirut Exhibition Centre, and ARTER in Istanbul. In 2016 they were part of the team of curatorial attachés of the 20th Biennale of Sydney. At the Venice Biennale, they were curators of the Lebanese Pavilion in 2013 and the Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates in 2019.
