Taking its name from a play on words in the work by Diana López—¿Qué escultura? (What sculpture?) and ¿Qué es cultura? (What is culture?)—the exhibition investigates the dynamic intersection between object, environment, artist, and spectator. Inspired by Rosalind Krauss’s influential 1979 essay Sculpture in the Expanded Field and Alexander Alberro’s reimagining of this concept as the “aesthetic field,” Quéscultura? highlights Latin American perspectives that have long contributed to reshaping how we experience and define “art”. As Alberro writes, “The artistic experience becomes a [shared] transitional phenomenon, prompting the spectator to relate with others and with an environment that surrounds and envelops her.” This spirit of collaboration and embodied engagement runs through the exhibition, where works are not simply viewed but experienced in relationship—with space, with others, and with culture itself. Through a diversity of forms, materials, and perspectives, Quéescultura? offers a vibrant meditation on the ever-evolving relationship between culture and sculpture. Rather than proposing fixed answers, the exhibition invites viewers into an open-ended, relational dialogue—one that continues to unfold with each new encounter.
