First organized by the Green Family Art Foundation in Dallas, the exhibition arrives in New York as a sweeping survey of artistic achievement shaped by the Academy’s rigorous training and its enduring commitment to exceptional studio practice. Bringing together works by past Chubb Fellows alongside a broader circle of alumni, faculty, and artists deeply linked to the school, the exhibition highlights a community united by mastery of technique and the continual pursuit of contemporary innovation. The Green family had been building their collection for years before realizing that a remarkable number of the artists they were drawn to—independently and without intention—were affiliated with the New York Academy of Art. This pattern became even more striking when they discovered that several of these artists had been awarded the Academy’s prestigious Chubb Fellowship, one of its highest recognitions for alumni demonstrating outstanding technical skill and artistic vision. This accidental discovery revealed an unmistakable throughline: the Academy’s rigorous approach to studio training consistently produced artists whose work resonated deeply with the Foundation’s mission and sensibilities. Chubb Fellows & Friends was conceived as a way to honor this unexpected convergence and give it public expression. Founded in 1982 with the support of Andy Warhol, the New York Academy of Art was created in response to what Warhol viewed as a pervasive shift in graduate art programs toward theory at the expense of traditional studio instruction. Warhol believed that true artistic freedom was rooted in disciplined training—especially drawing, painting, and sculpting from life—and he helped establish the Academy as a place where these foundational skills would not only be preserved but reimagined for contemporary practice. Today, the Academy remains one of the few graduate institutions in the United States devoted to intensive technical training, not as a constraint but as the essential groundwork for ambitious, innovative artmaking. This philosophy is evident throughout Chubb Fellows & Friends. The exhibition showcases artists whose work reflects the Academy’s signature combination of technical fluency and forward-looking experimentation. Whether through painting, drawing, sculpture, or mixed media, the featured artists share a lineage rooted in acute observation, anatomical rigor, and the belief that mastery of the fundamentals is a catalyst for creative evolution. “It is deeply meaningful to see the Green Family Art Foundation bring together such an extraordinary group of artists whose journeys began at the New York Academy of Art” said Laura Doyle, Senior Vice President, Chubb’s Fine Art & Valuable Collections Product Manager, Personal Risk Services. “This exhibition not only celebrates the remarkable achievements of Chubb Fellows and their peers, but also honors the power community where collectors, artists, and institutions come together to champion the next generation of creative talent.” By presenting the work of Chubb Fellows alongside that of fellow alumni, faculty, and long-standing collaborators, the exhibition highlights a vibrant intergenerational dialogue. It illuminates how the Academy’s emphasis on technical excellence, rediscovered by the Green family through their collecting, has continually shaped a community of artists who elevate and redefine figurative and representational art. Organized in partnership with the Green Family Art Foundation, and curated by its Director, Katherine Delony, the New York presentation offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the depth and breadth of a program whose influence has quietly but profoundly transformed contemporary figurative art.
