Distant Star
David ZwirnerDavid Zwirner is pleased to present Distant Star, a solo exhibition of new work by Huma Bhabha (b. 1962) at the gallery's Paris location in June 2025. Bhabha's layered and nuanced sculptures and drawings center on a reinvention of the figure and its expressive possibilities. The exhibition features sculptures by the artist, made from materials including cork and clay, which the artist carves, molds, gouges, paints over, and otherwise marks up. Also on view is an oxidized cast-iron sculpture, as well as a selection of works on paper and photographs that present new motifs and further the artist's innovative formal approach to portraiture. Distant Star is the gallery's third exhibition of Bhabha's work since the announcement of her representation in 2022, and it follows her two concurrent solo shows held at the gallery's 537 West 20th Street and 34 East 69th Street locations in New York in February and March 2024. This is Bhabha's first solo exhibition in Paris since 2009. The exhibition coincides with Bhabha's participation in Encounters: Giacometti, opening in May 2025 at the Barbican Centre in London. Co-curated by Shanay Jhaveri and Émilie Bouvard, and co-organized by the Barbican and the Fondation Giacometti, this presentation features works by Bhabha shown alongside sculptures by Alberto Giacometti. Bhabha's presentation is the first of three rotating shows at the Barbican, each with a different contemporary artist showing their work in dialogue with Giacometti's oeuvre.
