At the heart of Jason Martin’s exhibition is a new group of large, highly colourful works on paper in which the artist experiments with dyes. These colours do not contain pigments, like oil or acrylic paint, but have a reactive and complex relationship with moisture, light and heat. The somewhat unpredictable results of this complex painterly process enable the artist to exploit the intriguing interplay between control and chance. The works on paper are juxtaposed with recently completed oil paintings, the dynamic and expansive lyrical impression and chromatic palette of which call to mind the light phenomena of nature. Jason Martin consistently explores the possibilities and facets of abstract painting in his brightly coloured and sometimes opulent art. In his work, which is situated somewhere between Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism, Martin repeatedly employs new and surprising methods and techniques in both his application of paint and the materials he uses to address fundamental questions about the illusion and rhetoric of painting. For this artist, painting is a performative act that often allows for the creation of diverse, seductive, and energetic works. This can be seen in the oil paintings, the widest outer dimension of which corresponds to the length of a horizontal line drawn in one go, as well as in the richly coloured works on paper, which produce an incalculable result within the time frame of their creation. ***** Die Buchmann Galerie freut sich eine Ausstellung mit neuen Arbeiten von Jason Martin ankündigen zu können. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung von Jason Martin stehen neue großformatige energiegeladene Ölbilder, die in ihrer lyrischen Anmutung und dem Farbspektrum an Lichtphänomene der Natur erinnern. Im Dialog dazu steht ein Konvolut neuer Arbeiten auf Papier, in denen der Künstler mit Farbstoffen arbeitet. Diese enthalten keine Farbpigmente, wie Öl- oder Acrylfarben, sondern haben eine reaktive und komplexe Beziehung zu Feuchtigkeit, Licht und Wärme. Damit sind die malerischen Ergebnisse im Prozess für den Künstler teilweise unvorhersehbar und ermöglichen ein interessantes Zusammenspiel zwischen Kontrolle und Zufall. Jason Martin lotet in den farblich kräftigen und teilweise opulenten Arbeiten die Möglichkeiten und Facetten der abstrakten Malerei konsequent weiter aus. Ohnehin bedient sich Martin in seinem zwischen Minimalismus und abstraktem Expressionismus angesiedelten Werk immer wieder neuer und überraschender Methoden und Techniken des Farbauftrags oder der verwendeten Materialien, um grundlegende Fragen zur Illusion und Rhetorik der Malerei zu behandeln. Malerei ist für Jason Martin auch ein performativer Akt, der oft dem Zufall Raum lässt, um Werke zu schaffen, die mannigfaltig, verführerisch und energiegeladen sind. Das zeigt sich in den Ölbildern, deren breitestes Außenmaß der Länge einer in einem Zug gezogenen horizontalen Linie entspricht, wie auch bei den farblich opulenten Papierarbeiten, die im zeitlichen Rahmen ihrer Entstehung ein unkalkulierbares Ergebnis erbringen.
