Selected Paintings

David Whelan is an artist who paints small intimate oil paintings of common urban and rural subjects he has continually returned to through the years. The paintings speak to what his plein air forebears have always sought: the inner desire to represent and get right what is seen. His subjects are thoughtfully selected and intuitively constructed with a Modernist rigor and economy of brush work that in its tenderness of touch would seem intended as an intimate letter to a dear friend. —David Dewey David Whelan is an artist living in the Hudson Valley, New York. He holds degrees from Lyme Academy College of Fine Art (BFA) and the Yale University School of Art (MFA, Painting/ Printmaking). His work has been shown in the US and internationally, including Astor Weeks and Hirschl and Adler. He is a recipient of residencies at MacDowell, the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, a 2016 Fulbright Fellowship to Athens, Greece, and a 2012 Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship. Whelan is also a writer whose texts have appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, Two Coats of Paint, and Effects Journal.
