Para SiteTolia Astakhishvili, Heman Chong, Covey Gong, Ko Sin Tung, Nawin Nuthong, Anna Sew Hoy, Bo Wang and Lu Pan, Tianyi Zheng, Stella Zhong Para Site is pleased to launch its thirtieth-anniversary programmes with Site-seeing, an exhibition that revisits and responds to the institution's foundational 1996 exhibition of the same name. Re-engaging with its core questions, Site-seeing explores how urban space, memory, and art-making have evolved within today's global cities. The exhibition brings together nine artists and artist groups from the Asia Pacific region and beyond. Through commissioned and recent works spanning installations, moving images, and sculptures, Site-seeing expands upon the original exhibition's conceptual investigations. Featuring a generation of artists born between the 1970s and 1990s, their works collectively address the complexities of near-constant redevelopment that define much of contemporary urban life. By placing Hong Kong in dialogue with neighboring and distant cities, the works probe into the myriad of public and private interests that drive urban change, staging the city as a space shaped by regulation and alienation. Simultaneously, however, many of the works attend to the moments of wonder, humor, and meaning that persist within the cracks of the built environment. Over the course of three decades, Para Site has become indelibly woven into the urban fabric of Hong Kong and its region. On the occasion of this milestone year, the exhibition convenes a group of artists whose personal biographies and practices are shaped by living within these very conditions, and re-examines what urban development means for the region—and how it textures our everyday lives. Curated by Junni Chen and Yuanyu Li, Site-seeing inaugurates Para Site: 30 Years, a year-long series of exhibitions, performances, public programmes, and residencies. Inspired by the institution's early ethos of pairing artists in dialogue, the anniversary programme fosters conversations across practices, histories, and geographies, exploring the possibilities that emerge when diverse ideas converge.
