Apple, Elm & Cotton

JDJ

17 May – 27 May 2024

San Francisco-based designer Evan Kinori is showing an exhibition at JDJ featuring the launch of his debut furniture collection. This special exhibition coincides with NYCxDesign Festival, and also showcases a new offering of naturally colored organic cotton clothing and a small-batch cider by Occam Cider. Titled Apple, Elm & Cotton, the exhibition unites three coinciding narratives of deep, personal connection to craft, agriculture, and regional product. Each amplifes Kinori’s approach—as he puts it: “Doing things slower, more considered, and in the least destructive way possible. Focusing on passion and quality instead of profit. Searching for alternatives to globalization, working towards re-establishing true regional products.” The furniture collection is made-to-order just north of San Francisco, using only local sourced sustainably salvaged elm and other species like redwood and cypress. Relating to his clothing practice, the parameters placed around sourcing for the furniture are integral to the design and allow material to sit at the forefront. Evan Kinori is a clothing designer and trained patternmaker/sewer who began his company just under a decade ago. The brand offers a range of timeless garments constructed in California and Japan using high quality natural fiber fabrics sourced from reputable weaving mills across Japan, Europe & the UK. Each piece comes as part of a hand numbered edition.
