The Mac's Double Feature: Undoubtable Connections / Wasting Time

The Mac's Double Feature is a show comprising two solo exhibitions, titled Undoubtable Connections and Wasting Time, that are simultaneously on display at Shit Art Club in Downtown Los Angeles. Undoubtable Connections explores the concept of Universal Interconnectivity and specifically how we, as people, are all connected to one another and the earth. Rather than illustrating this idea through the inclusion of plethora of ideas, feelings, neurosis, and social situations where most viewers could easily relate to one idea - the Mac rejects the clutter and catch-all of maximalism as an attempt for us to find connection through a superficial overlap. He challenges the viewer to reckon with the fact that we are not exclusively bound to one another through the human condition, but that we also connect to one another on a primordial level; in the same way that we connect to all things on this earth. The Mac highlights this idea by paring down works to minimal watercolor paintings featuring strong, fluid contour lines that run until they form faces with colored pops of facial features, revealing that while we exist as individuals, live our own stories and are distinguishable, we cannot doubt that we are also characters in the narrative of a much larger truth. Wasting Time is a conceptual exhibition by the Mac that focuses on how we broadcast our internal self out into the world via our personas. The show will consist of half-a-dozen rooms designed and centered around televisions created by the Mac. Each room represents a compartmentalized piece of one’s self and the television is the conduit that represents what we show externally. The show is designed in a way to reflect on how we are multifaceted beings; and although we wear many different hats, they all go on the same head. Wasting Time is an examination that challenges why we develop personas and how we moderate and curate the expressions of our internal selves. The Mac suggests that we compartmentalize aspects of ourselves so that we can more neatly fit into different situations and discover that our individuality actually lies within the entirety of our being. While we need to compartmentalize ourselves in order to define what it is that makes us up, the Mac attests that our individuality is revealed when our internal differences leave their rooms and interact uninhibited like children on a playground. The Mac's Double Feature is a paradoxical juxtaposition that attempts to define how we are similar while focusing on things inherently unique to us. He celebrates our differences while also reminding us that we are one. In a time where so many things are happening at once, Double Feature fits right in and stands right out. —Lavs
