B. Wurtz
The First Twenty Years

Presenting a selection of Wurtz’s works from the first two decades of his artistic practice, the exhibition aims to highlight the formation of Wurtz’s idiosyncratic formal vocabulary during the 1970s and 1980s. From the 1970s onwards, Wurtz has been using commonplace materials that relate to the basic categories of life – food, clothing, shelter – to create sculptures that probe and explore the notions of monumentality and the quotidian. Combining and amending these materials, Wurtz began to cast the familiar in a new light while preserving the integrity of the used objects. With great attention to the range of the chosen materials and a nuanced sensibility for composition, Wurtz has been since the early works transforming fragments of the ordinary into sculptures of wit and poetic composure. B. Wurtz was born in 1948 in Pasadena, California, and lives and works in New York. His recent exhibitions include retrospective exhibitions at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2015), and at La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2016), as well as group exhibitions Brand New: Art and Commodity in the 1980sat Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (2018), and A Page from My Intimate Journal (Part I)at Gordon Robichaux, New York (2018). In 2012 Wurtz was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. ***** Galerija Gregor Podnar ist erfreut, die zweite Einzelausstellung von B. Wurtz anzukündigen. Mit der Präsentation von ausgewählten Werken der ersten zwei Jahrzehnte hebt die Ausstellung ‘The First Twenty Years’ die Entstehung von Wurtzs idiosynkratrischer Formensprache aus den frühen 1970er und 80er Jahren hervor. Seit den 1970er Jahren benutzt B. Wurtz alltägliche Gegenstände und Materialien, die mit den grundlegenden Kategorien des Lebens oft eng verbunden sind, wie Nahrung, Kleidung oder Behausung - um daraus Skulpturen zu schaffen, die die Vorstellungen von Monumentalität und Alltag erforschen. Durch Kombination und Umwandlung dieser Materialien gelingt es Wurtz, das Vertraute in einem neuen Licht zu gestalten, um zugleich jedoch das Wesen des Gebrauchsgegenstandes zu wahren. Mit großer Sorgfalt für die Auswahl der ausgewählten Materialien und einer außerordentlichen Sensibilität für die Komposition gelingt es B. Wurtz, bereits in seinen frühen Werken Fragmente des Gewöhnlichen in Skulpturen voller Witz und poetischer Gelassenheit umzuwandeln. B.Wurtz ist 1948 in Pasadena, Kalifornien geboren und lebt und arbeitet in New York. Seine jüngsten Ausstellungen beinhalten unter anderem eine Retrospektive im BALTIC, Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2015) und La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2016), sowie die beiden Gruppenausstellungen Brand New: Art and Commodity in the 1980s im Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.
