Laboratorium für die Feststellung des Offensichtlichen (Laboratory for Appraising the Apparent), curated by Brigitte Franzen. The exhibition’s title is a quote from Michel Majerus’ notes describing his outlook on painting in an oddly poetic yet precise and clear way. For him – and his generation – the pictorial world coexisted with image production without judgment or valuation. The acknowledgement of superficiality and the struggle with its significance, as well as the attempt to reevaluate and invent anew, all played parts in Majerus’ perception of ‘the apparent.’ The exhibition’s second chapter will feature of a new selection of works from early on in the artist’s career, partially showcasing those created during his time as a student at the Kunst- akademie in Stuttgart. This presentation provides a representative look at the spectrum of visual questions and themes that have proven to be groundbreaking within Michel Majerus’ oeuvre. These early works also hint at seldom-acknowledged facets of his work, providing insight into the young artist’s search for his own aesthetic language. Michel Majerus’ notebooks from 1995, which are part of the Estate’s archives, bear witness to the artist’s constantly evolving world of ideas, his focus on the artistic process, and his confrontations with his own position in the art world. These notebooks will be digitized over the course of the exhibition and presented as part of the show, along with the artist’s library, as a key point of reference for the artist’s work. To conclude the exhibition’s third chapter in 2018, the Michel Majerus Estate will publish a facsimile with scholarly annotation of this first notebook from 1995. The three-part exhibition is on view from April 2017 to March 2018 in Michel Majerus’ former studio and current home of the Michel Majerus Estate, located at Knaackstraße 12. ***** Wir freuen uns, Sie über die Eröffnung des zweiten Kapitels der von Brigitte Franzen kuratierten Einzelausstellung Michel Majerus. Laboratorium für die Feststellung des Offensichtlichen zu informieren. Der Ausstellungstitel ist ein Zitat aus den Notizen von Michel Majerus. Es beschreibt auf seltsam poetische und zugleich klare Weise Michel Majerus’ Blick auf die Malerei. Die Bildwelt war für ihn – und seine Generation – ein Nebeneinander von Bildprodukten, ohne Wertung und Wertig- keit. Dieses Bekenntnis zur Oberfläche und das Ringen um ihre Bedeutung sowie der Versuch der Umwertung und der Neubesetzung münden bei Majerus in den Begriff des Offensichtlichen. Im zweiten Kapitel der Ausstellung wird eine neue Werkauswahl mit Arbeiten aus dem Frühwerk des Künstlers gezeigt, die teils noch während der Studienjahre an der Stuttgarter Kunstaka- demie entstanden. Die Präsentation gibt einen exemplarischen Einblick in das umfangreiche Spektrum an bildnerischen Fragen und Themen, die sich für das Schaffen von Michel Majerus als wegweisend erwiesen. Zugleich erschließen die frühen Werke bisher noch wenig rezipierte Facetten seiner Arbeit und geben Einblick in die Suche des jungen Künstlers nach einer eigenen Bildsprache. Eine sich formierende Ideenwelt, der Fokus auf Schaffensprozesse und das Ringen um eine eigene künstlerische Position stehen auch im Zentrum von Michel Majerus' Notizheften aus dem Jahr 1995, die sich im Nachlassarchiv befinden. Diese werden im Zuge der Ausstellungslaufzeit nach und nach digitalisiert und zusammen mit der Bibliothek des Künstlers als Referenz zu den Werken im Rahmen der Ausstellung präsentiert. Zum Ende des dritten Ausstellungskapitels, das im Januar 2018 eröffnen wird, plant der Michel Majerus Estate die Herausgabe einer faksimi- lierten, wissenschaftlich aufgearbeiteten Edition des ersten Notizheftes aus dem Jahr 1995. Die in drei Kapitel gegliederte Ausstellung ist von April 2017 bis März 2018 in den Räumen des ehemaligen Ateliers von Michel Majerus in der Knaackstraße 12 zu sehen – dem heutigen Sitz des Michel Majerus Estate.
