Frestonian GalleryFrestonian Gallery is pleased to present the first full solo exhibition of works by Barry McGlashan. An evening of dual celebration, both for his magnificent new body of work, as well as his recent and much merited election as an Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). We do hope you can join us. Thresholds, metaphorical and literal, are perhaps the most omnipresent and important motif in these extraordinarily evocative new paintings. These works bring us to the edge of lakes, rivers, roads; lead us to the foot of mountains and press us close to the invisible glass barrier of windows. The metaphorical, or rather metaphysical, threshold might be said to be the function of memory itself. Just as a window is both a portal and a barrier, so too can memory be both informative and obstructive. The paintings in ‘Invisible Lines, Immortal Beams’ evoke something of the sometimes beautiful, sometimes maddening sensation of the half-remembered dream – images at once so vivid and yet so close to slipping away entirely... press here for more Barry McGlashan was born in 1974 in Aberdeen on the Northeast Coast of Scotland. McGlashan studied painting at Gray's School of Art, graduating in 1996. He taught in the painting department at Gray's between 1998 and 2005. In 2001, McGlashan was awarded The Alastair Salvesen Scholarship through the Royal Scottish Academy. Examples of his work are held in numerous private and public collections worldwide, including Aberdeen Art Gallery, Scotland; The Scottish Society, New York, USA; and the RSA, Edinburgh, Scotland. In December 2024 McGlashan was elected as one of four new Academicians of the Royal Scottish Academy, alongside Claire Barclay, Ken Currie, and Caroline Walker. He lives and works in Edinburgh.
