A Hug From the Art WorldEmblazoned on his ceramic vessels, Australian artist Jake Clark captures and monumentalizes the familiar locales that have come to define the social milieu of The Hamptons. Showing immaculate perception of his surroundings, Clark is immediately drawn to destinations that capture the essence of each neighborhood, from the golden pear in Bridgehampton all the way to Montauk, that have been loved for generations. Utilizing the ready-made identity of each destination that holds both visual and emotional significance, the very concept of the location is distilled into the popular objects that define each restaurant, drive-in, and bar. Occupying the former studio space of artist Rashid Johnson, the environment created walking through seventeen hand-built, ornately decorated ceramic vessels invokes the essence of these familiar and emblematic locations. Clark’s vessels capture the ideal day out east: BEC bagel at Goldbergs, lunch at the Clam Bar or Boshwick’s, ice cream from the Candy Kitchen on a hot day, dinner at Pierre’s or maybe the Palm, capped off with a movie at the Sag Harbor Cinema before live music at Stephen Talkhouse. While this is Clark’s first solo exhibition out east, his work can already be found in the homes of its residents and adorning the newly opened Eric Emanuel boutique just a few doors down Newtown Lane. Clark’s love for these locales which mythicize a town in the public imagination translate his work across language barriers and international borders, from Athens to Brussels, Paris to Dubai, Hong Kong to Miami, and Los Angeles to East Hampton. Jake Clark was born in 1985 in Melbourne, Australia. Clark is an autodidactic artist and ceramicist. He now lives and works in New York City.
