The Airplane Installations: Indoor, Outdoor Site-Specific Work

AIRPLANE is pleased to present a series of new site-specific installations by Brooklyn based artist Leeza Meksin. Opening concurrently with Bushwick Open Studios, Meksin will engage and transform the gallery space and the backyard with planes of fabric, stretched and fastened with ratchet straps and zip ties. The artist will bisect the gallery space with skewed and stretched screens: from construction tarp to lattice fencing; from fishing nets to fishnet stockings. Colorful, impermanent, and fetish materials juxtapose with the clean lines and austere white walls of the gallery. For the backyard, Meksin will stretch and float the materials from the gallery to the patio and garden, blurring interior and exterior spaces. Meksin’s installations explore the relationship between buildings, bodies and paintings; how the conventions that govern them, overlap and reinforce each other. What happens to large inanimate objects when they get dressed up in architectural drag? Meksin extends the question of gender to the straight lines, durable materials, and the rectilinear orifices of painting and architecture. Opening on Friday, May 30, AIRPLANE Installations will be open to the public through Bushwick Open Studios Weekend May 30-June 1, 2014, and during Sunday gallery hours until July 6. AIRPLANE will host a fabric dyeing demo with the artist on Sunday June 15th from 2-5PM. Elizaveta (Leeza) Meksin is an interdisciplinary artist, who makes paintings, installations, public art & multiples. Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Leeza immigrated to the United States in 1989, and now lives and works in Bushwick, NY. She received a joint BA/MA in Comparative Literature and Humanities from the University of Chicago (2000); a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2005), and a MFA in Painting from the Yale School of Art (2007). Recipient of the Robert Schoelkopf Fellowship (2006) and the Open Society Soros Foundation Grant (2009), Meksin has exhibited her paintings and installations at Primetime, NY(2013), Regina Rex, NY (2011), Adds Donna, Chicago (2011), Cosign Projects, St. Louis (2011), Ohio State University (2012), The Lot @ Artspace, New Haven (2012), and many other venues. She also runs Ortega y Gasset Projects, a curated gallery space in the Bushwick/ Ridgewood neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens.
