Peter Kogler is a pioneering artist in the field of computer-assisted creation. Employing cutting-edge technology for the past thirty years, the artist has made use of a series of recurring motifs, materialized in different forms: bi- and tri-dimensional prints, sculpture, furniture, wallpaper, lighting fixtures, collages and other installations. Since the start of his career, his iconography has been made up of ants, brains, terrestrial globes, lightbulbs and wavy lines, and is a metaphor for networks, the constant stream of information and social ties. This new exhibition brings together the artist's most recent works in the first gallery space, while the second space features works produced between 1990 and 2020. The first exhibition space features recent works, including two holographic devices projecting animated forms: a brain and a globe. Peter Kogler continues his exploration of new technologies, particularly with new video projection techniques and augmented reality experiments. Alongside these animated forms, the artist, renowned for his immersive architectural installations, presents face-to-face a monumental wallpaper and a printed fabric. A tangle of lines halfway between a spider's web and the graphic representation of a neural system is silk-screened onto these two media, which are now recurrent in the artist's work. Finally, Peter Kogler brings together the latest works in his series of ultraviolet printed and cut-out aluminum sculptures. These mural works take up the artist's usual iconography with pointed fingers, an ant, a brain, and an ear. This selection of recent works is completed in the second space by historic works, namely two silkscreen prints on canvas dating from the 1990s. These reproduce motifs used by Kogler in major exhibitions of the period, such as Documenta IX (1992). The repetition of motifs in different configurations or media is characteristic of Peter Kogler's work from the1980s/90s onwards. In addition, the artist combines these canvases with metal sculptures, a technique that has been inseparable from his work since 2000. In his ongoing quest to associate computer-assisted drawing with technical means capable of transcribing digital files, Peter Kogler has experimented extensively with the possibilities offered by the industry to create sculptures of various scales, both indoor and outdoor, even going so far as to produce functional works akin to design. Peter Kogler was born in Innsbruck in 1959. He lives and works in Vienna (Austria). He has been at the center of numerous international exhibitions, including Documenta IX (1992) and X (1997) in Kassel, and has represented Austria at the 1995 Venice Biennale. He has enjoyed solo exhibitions in numerous institutions such as the MAMCO Geneva (2007), the Mumok Vienna (2009), the Museu Coleção Berardo Lisbon (2009) and more recently at the MSU Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (2014), the Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna (2015), and the ING Art Center, Brussels (2016). ***** La Galerie Mitterrand est heureuse de présenter une nouvelle exposition de l’artiste autrichien Peter Kogler, du 13 septembre au 2 novembre 2024. Peter Kogler est un artiste pionnier de la création assistée par ordinateur. À partir de son intérêt pour la technologie, il décline depuis une trentaine d'années une série de motifs récurrents qu'il matérialise sous de nombreuses formes : impressions bi et tridimensionnelles, sculpture, mobilier, papier-peint, dispositifs lumineux, collages et autres installations. Son iconographie, constituée depuis ses débuts de fourmis, cerveaux, globes terrestres, ampoules et lignes ondulatoires, est une métaphore des réseaux, des flux et des liens sociaux. Cette nouvelle exposition réunit dans un premier espace les œuvres les plus récentes de l’artiste, tandis que le second espace de la galerie est consacré à une sélection d’œuvres produites entre les années 1990 et 2020. Dans le premier espace d’exposition sont donc présentées deux dispositifs holographiques projetant des formes animées : un cerveau et un globe terrestre. Peter Kogler continue ici son exploration des nouvelles technologies avec notamment l’exploitation de techniques innovantes de projection vidéo, ou encore avec des expériences de réalité augmentée. Parallèlement à ces animations, l’artiste, particulièrement connu pour ses installations architecturales immersives, choisit de placer face à face un papier peint et un tissu imprimé, chacun de tailles monumentales. Un entrelacs de lignes, à mi-chemin entre toile d’araignée et représentation graphique d’un système neuronal, est sérigraphié sur ces deux supports désormais récurrents dans l’œuvre de l’artiste. Enfin, Peter Kogler réunit les dernières œuvres de sa série de sculptures en aluminium découpées et imprimées aux ultra-violets. Ces œuvres murales reprennent l’iconographie habituelle de l’artiste avec des doigts pointés, une fourmi, un cerveau et une oreille. Cette sélection d’œuvres récentes est complétée dans le second espace par des œuvres historiques de l’artiste et notamment deux sérigraphies sur toile datant des années 1990.Ces œuvres reprennent les motifs utilisés par Kogler lors d’importantes expositions réalisées durant cette décennie, telle que la Documenta IX (1992). La répétition des motifs dans différentes configurations ou supports est caractéristique du travail de Peter Kogler dès les années 1980-90. En parallèle, l’artiste associe à ces toiles des sculptures issues de la métallerie, technique indissociable du travail de l’artiste à partir des années 2000. Dans sa recherche permanente d’association du dessin assisté par ordinateur à des moyens techniques capables de retranscrire des fichiers numériques, Peter Kogler a beaucoup expérimenté les possibilités offertes par l’industrie pour réaliser des sculptures de différentes échelles, d’intérieur ou d’extérieur, allant même jusqu’à produire des œuvres fonctionnelles proches du design. Peter Kogler est né à Innsbruck en 1959 et vit et travaille à Vienne (Autriche). Peter Kogler a fait l'objet de nombreuses expositions internationales, notamment à la Documenta IX (1992) et X (1997), à Kassel, ainsi que dans le pavillon autrichien de la Biennale de Venise (1995).
