Locker Room

4 September – 29 September 2025

Locker Room is pleased to present Daniel Malikyar, an Afghan-American photographer whose fierce curiosity and disarming kindness have taken him everywhere from the favelas of Brazil to the mountains of Afghanistan. Whether he's documenting young footballers in Rio or working on his upcoming Afghanistan documentary, Daniel approaches every encounter with genuine openness; the kind of person who can strike up a conversation with rowdy football fans on a London train and walk away with lifelong friends and a ticket to the match. This September, the gallery presents Daniel's first ever exhibition, Portraits of the Sisters of the Valley, photographed in 2023. These women in California's Central Valley have taken vows that spell out Solace. They grow cannabis according to lunar cycles, wear simple habits, and create healing medicine with their hands; a sacred rebellion that challenges everything we think we know about spirituality, community, and what it means to heal. These photographs exist beyond documentation - they are visual manifestos of a way of life that is both ancient and utterly contemporary. Malikyar captures something that feels mythic: women in habits walking across California farmland like characters from a psychedelic Western film, hands blessing cannabis seedlings with the same reverence medieval mystics reserved for prayer, shotguns held with the quiet confidence of those who know exactly who they are.
