Vito Schnabel GalleryVito Schnabel Gallery is pleased to present a two-part exhibition curated by Bruno Bischofberger in New York at the gallery's West 19th and Clarkson Street locations. Julian Schnabel: Paintings from 1978–1987, at 455 West 19th Street, features thirteen important works from the first decade of the artist’s career, including The Patients and the Doctors (1978), the first plate painting he made, as well as two of his earliest wax paintings, Tower of Babel (for A.A.) (1976-78) and Procession (for Jean Vigo) (1979). At the Clarkson Street gallery, four later plate paintings from Schnabel's series dedicated to the artist Peter Beard are on view. The Van Gogh's Trees of Home for Peter Beard paintings depict an allée of trees in Saint-Rémy de Provence, made famous by the paintings by Van Gogh. Bruno Bischofberger, the acclaimed Swiss gallerist and art dealer, first exhibited Schnabel's work in Zurich in 1980, and continued to champion and exhibit Schnabel's work in Europe for the next four decades. As Bischofberger states, the exhibition will feature a selection of works by Schnabel, who is “one of the most significant American painters of the last 45 years. In the 1970s, when painting was no longer possible because painting was said to be dead, he reinvented a new path which changed everything. This opened a whole new chapter in art history.”
