Jake Clark
Paintings and Pots
A Hug From The Art WorldA Hug From The Art World is pleased to present Jake Clark's Paintings and Pots. Across a dozen solo exhibitions over four continents, Jake Clark’s ceramic pots have paid homage to iconic social institutions, restaurants, watering holes and hotels around the globe. Now, Clark turns his attention to the Golden Age of American Advertising. For the first time incorporating large scale oil and acrylic paintings into his practice, Clark has created a dialog between the two mediums, each playing off the other. Glazed ceramic and raw canvas provide him contrasting surfaces on which to tell a unified story of American identity. Paintings and Pots celebrates the bedrock of the American Dream. Growing up in Melbourne, trips to New York and Los Angeles exposed Clark to a larger world of choices at a young age. The sheer variety and tantalizing presentation of what was on offer at Macy’s or down the aisles of Gelson’s stuck with him. This abiding interest ultimately led Clark back to the hand painted advertisements of the 1950’s and 1960’s, where mascots like Brillo’s Prudence Potts and the Raid Bugs became foundational symbols of Americanism alongside politicians, athletes and movie stars. Whether choosy moms chose JIF or Elvis preferred Skippy, branding is the essence of Americana. Jake Clark was born in 1985 in Melbourne, Australia. Clark is an autodidactic artist and ceramicist. He now lives and works in New York City. Recent exhibitions include Rockefeller Center, New York; I Know What You Did Last Summer and At the Carlyle, A Hug From The Art World, New York; Carolwood, Albertz Benda, Los Angeles; Home, Piermarq, Sydney; Fantasia, Gallery Target, Tokyo; Monster Mash, Yusto/Giner, Madrid, Miam Miam, Volery Gallery, Dubai; Icônes, Galerie Julien Cadet, Paris; More Life, Rodolphe Janssen, Belgium; Plants and Ashtrays, Kantor Gallery, Beverly Hills.
