Ho’okolonaio
Duckworth GalleryDavid Nakabayashi presents Ho'okolonaio at the Duckworth Gallery in Brooklyn. Duckworth Gallery is proud to present Ho’okolonaio, a solo exhibition of artwork by David Nakabayashi. The title of the show is a Hawai’ian word meaning “to colonize,” particularly as seen from the perspective of the colonized. Nakabayashi was born in Germany and grew up as an “army brat” in Japan, Oklahoma, and Texas. “Through drawing, painting, and ceramic sculpture, this body of work is a deeply personal search for meaning, what it is to be Hawai’ian, to belong to a place that may no longer exist – if it ever did – and to reclaim even a fragment of what was lost,” said Nakabayashi.
