Seasons

We are pleased to present the upcoming exhibition Seasons by Ryan Mosely. "Seasons are not simply seen; they are lived through, subtly changing how the body moves and feels before we are even aware of it. In Mosley’s paintings, figure and landscape appear continuous as figures echo the contours of the land or seem to rise from it, they are part of the landscape rather than placed upon it. In Bedrock, the striding figure appears flattened into the same visual plane as the water and rocks behind him, his body drawing its colours from the landscape and his skin touched by the peach light of dusk. Where we can often experience the body as a barrier between inner life and the external world, these paintings instead visualise continuity, suggesting that seasonal experience is both internal and external both felt through the body and shaped by the world around it." —Beth Hughes Ryan Mosley (b. 1980), lives and works in Sheffield, UK, and studied painting at the Royal College of Art, London. The artist often synthesises art-historical themes, styles and movements to create surreal, folk-inspired paintings that appear both contemporary and timeless. Mosley approaches each work intuitively, often finding the image in the process of making, while treating the paintbrush as a pencil to build images through layers of translucent washes. This spontaneous process results in theatrical spaces and fantastic landscapes, in which the figures continuously resonate with their environment, and vice versa. They appear at once whimsical and tragic, ambiguous and intriguing. In recent works, the magnitude of the natural world has become more prominent. Human figures are often dwarfed by the enormity of their surroundings.
