I Was Another Conversation

Frosch & Co is pleased to present I Was Another Conversation, the gallery's sixth solo exhibition by Seattle based artist Robert Yoder. This recent body of work focuses on themes of isolation, introspection, and self-censorship. What began as an exploration of identity gradually evolved into a direct confrontation with silence and the isolating distance it can create. After an extended hiatus from making art, Yoder returns with compositions that emphasize solitary, hovering and disconnected forms, marked by a sense of the individualism of each element. Working with a limited palette of mostly black, white, and red, the artist uses found and everyday materials such as cotton towels, duct tape, or gatorboard to evoke a stripped-down visual language. Through redacted text and repurposed common supplies, he constructs an alphabet of isolation, where absence and silence become central forms of communication. Robert Yoder reflects on a lifelong pattern of withholding and a preference for perception over expression, and the resulting tension of being present but silent. "I prefer to observe and absorb information rather than provide it quickly," he notes, "which is also how I approach the imagery in my recent paintings." I Was Another Conversation shows how distance, restraint, and muted presence shape both visual form and emotional resonance. Robert Yoder lives and works in Seattle. He received his BFA from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and his MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Yoder's work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across the United States and Europe. Public collections include Microsoft, Boeing, Hallmark, Nike, and Hewlett-Packard. Museum collections include Seattle Art Museum, Portland Art Museum (Oregon), Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and The Henry Art Gallery. His work is in the collections of the cities of Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR.
