David Giroire[Scroll down for French version / Veuillez trouver ci-dessous la version française] For this solo project with Del Vaz, Paul Mpagi Sepuya presents a series of photo-proof collages made during a recent residency at Lightworks in Syracuse, New York. “The suggestive and overlapping meanings in the term “darkroom” lie at the center of my current work. It is both the historical origin of the photographer’s craft as well as the privileged yet marginalized site of queer and colored sexuality and socialization. The black velvet backdrop of the photographer’s studio not only grounds the subject in front of it, but creates an anterior space of another potential encounter. Within my photographs I inhabit the obscuring fabric, or my stand-in is a glimpse of the camera or tripod in reflection. My hands touch, manipulate and adjust. I move from in front of the camera to behind it and reflected in the mirror. My body and the black figure of the camera-tripod throw into relief the latent bodily accumulations on the mirror’s surface. I am interested in inhabiting an ambiguous place within these photographs. My role as photographer is one of negotiation - oscillating between the precision of the photographic apparatus and loss of rationality within erotic excess.” – Paul Mpagi Sepuya Paul Mpagi Sepuya (b. 1982, San Bernardino, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles, where he received an MFA in photography at UCLA in 2016. From 2000 – 2014 Sepuya resided in New York City, receiving a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2004. He is a recipient of the 2017 Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s grant for Los Angeles artists. Sepuya’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include “Double Enclosure” at Fotomuseum, Amsterdam; “Dark Room” at Document Gallery, Chicago; “Dark Room” at team (bungalow), Los Angeles and “Figures, Grounds and Studies” at Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York City. Recent group exhibitions include “Being: New Photography2018” at The Museum of Modern Art, New York; “Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon,” at The New Museum, New York; “This is Not a Prop” at David Zwirner Gallery New York City and “Tag: Proposals on Queer Play and the Way Forward” at ICA Philadelphia. Presented by Del Vaz Projects, Los Angeles ***** À l’occasion de son exposition personnelle avec Del Vaz Projects, Paul Mpagi Sepuya présente une série de collages à partir d’épreuves photographiques réalisée récemment lors d’une résidence chez Lightworks, à Syracuse, dans l’Etat de New York. Selon les propos de l’artiste : « Les différentes significations du terme “darkroom”, à la fois suggestives et se superposant, sont plongées au cœur de mon travail en ce moment. Cela s’appuie aussi bien sur l’origine historique du savoir-faire du photographe que sur le nom donné au lieu d’échange exclusif bien que marginal de la sexualité queer et des minorités. Le fond en velours noir de l’atelier du photographe ne se contente pas de sculpter son sujet devant lui, mais il créé un espace antérieur duquel une nouvelle interaction peut surgir. Au sein de mes photographies, j'incarne le tissu occultant lorsqu’un reflet de l’appareil ou du trépied ne s’y est pas substitué. Mes mains ajustent, touchent et manipulent. J’alterne les passages devant ou derrière l’objectif et mon reflet apparait lui dans le miroir. Mon corps et la silhouette noire du trépied de l’appareil font apparaître l’accumulation sous-jacente de la matière sur la surface du miroir. Je souhaite exister d’une façon ambiguë dans ces photographies. Mon rôle en tant que photographe est d’arriver à un compromis ; osciller entre la précision du dispositif photographique et la perte de toute rationalité par excès d’érotisme. » Paul Mpagi Sepuya (né en 1982 à San Bernardino, CA) vit et travaille à Los Angeles où il a obtenu en 2016 un MFA en photographie à l’Université de UCLA. Entre 2000 et 2014 Sepuya a vécu à New York, obtenant un BFA de la New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts en 2004. Il est un des lauréats 2017 des bourses de la Fondation Rema Hort Mann pour les artistes vivant à Los Angeles. L’oeuvre de Sepuya figure dans de nombreuses collections parmi lesquelles celles du Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Solomon R.Guggenheim Museum, New York.
