Scaling Laws for an Entrainment Structure
Blade StudyIn her installation, Scaling Laws For An Open EnTrainment Structure, Clare Koury is addressing the part of the color spectrum that eyes don’t see. The gallery has been restructured into a resonant structure tuned to the Schumann Resonance: a naturally occurring electromagnetic frequency in the Earth's atmosphere that averages around 7.83 hertz. These frequencies propagate through lightning strikes and are believed to have subtle, significant impacts on human physiology, suggesting an unseen but pervasive connection between planetary rhythms and the human experience. The human eye detects 0.0035% of all incoming radiation. [You and I know there’s plenty more where that came from.] Cells respond accordingly. What humbly constitutes the bulk of experience lacks the apparent solidity of objects [that motivates us to name them]. But it is present and detectable across a range of spectra [beyond the scope of our native Lens]. [They don’t want you to know that] The remaining 99.9965% of all electromagnetic radiation bypasses vision but moves through the body at all times, interacting with cellular tissues and exerting varying degrees of oscillating influence. Radio waves from the sun and telecommunication pass through all earthly beings constantly. They are harmless enough at lower frequencies. The high-intensity radio waves of more powerful communication systems. [Survival requires sensitivity to stimuli]. [You’re a perceptive sensor]. [Figured it out yet?] [They don’t want you to know that you can be as sensitive as you want.] [Again.] Radio waves generally pass through any given body harmlessly at low enough frequencies. High-intensity radio waves, like those used in powerful communication systems, cause the molecules in bodies to oscillate, which generates heat and raises the temperature of our internal tissues causing them to break down more rapidly. Entropy is heat in motion. The range of perceptible, understood phenomena can be expanded by additionally expanding the aperture of one's attention. Meditation is long exposure which comes to its fullest definition through the stillness of the open lens of perception. [The waves you can’t see pass through your body every second of the day and your cells respond accordingly.] [What might be described as instinct or intuition is a function of the waves that on your body acting on your body and your cells are responding.] [In directing your awareness I am expanding your senses.] [Our sensory tools have necessary limitations.] Clare Koury (b. 1993, Kentucky) is an artist, educator and writer whose research explores natural phenomena, material transformation, and the construction of history. She received a Masters of Arts from Columbia University, and a Bachelors Degree from University of Chicago. Her approach draws from a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, blending material inquiry with metaphysical exploration, to better understand the invisible forces that influence human behavior. Her work endeavors to illuminate universal patterns—magnetic, solar, and sonic forces that bind the cosmos and life on Earth. Currently based in New York City, she teaches at UConn and has exhibited at institutions including Snow Gallery, The Emily Harvey Foundation, Randy Alexander Gallery, the Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art, Canary Test, The Jewish Museum and Produce Model. She was the 2021 Windgate fellow and resident at Josephine Sculpture Park in Frankfort, Kentucky and is the recipient of the Windgate Fellowship at Purchase College for Spring 2025.
