Erased de Clowning

Alex Berns

6 March – 5 April 2026

Curtis Mitchell's exhibition Erased de Clowning consists of seven large Giclée prints of stock images of clowns altered by household chemicals. As Mitchell addresses each clown their humanity surfaces and submerges until he deems them complex enough to warrant what might be called a soul. The flat white absence, the physical action, visible as expression, is embedded in the substrate. These pictures account for painting while not being tethered to its repudiation or cult. Curtis Mitchell relocated to New York in 1984 after receiving an MFA from Yale in 1983. Notable exhibitions include; Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York (1990), Mattress Factory, Pittsburg (2003), PS1 / MoMA (2006), Martos Gallery (2009), Shoot the Lobster (2022), No Inc. (2025) and Alex Berns (2025).
