Eternal Witness

Kerry Schuss Gallery

2 May – 7 June 2026

Kerry Schuss Gallery is pleased to present Eternal Witness, Julian Kent’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, which is comprised of ten paintings made of over the last year. The show’s title derives from the Biblical book of Isaiah, in which the word becomes the eternal witness for the misdoings of humanity, but also for the redemptive power of divine forces. Kent considers this beyond a Judeo-Christian sense, contemplating how we might consider pain, potency, and love in today’s world. On a formal level, Kent’s new work explores building through materiality. Compelled by a desire to employ dimensionality, Kent turns his attention to adding additional materials he then paints upon directly: cold wax, molding paste, clay, lace and fabric. The resulting relief-like canvases offer their subjects a palpable physical life: varied textures and sculptural application of his mediums imbue his figures and worlds with an arresting and pulsating presence. Ranging in size from small-scale close-ups to life-size larger canvases, the shifting scale invites the viewer to alternately peer in from a distance and fully enter these psychic and physical spaces. Julian Kent (b. 2001) lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio. Solo and two person shows, 2025 - Breathturn Gallerie Sardine, Amagansett, NY; Julian Kent and Emma Coleman, Outer Space Arts, Concord, NH; 2024 - Drama of Silence, Kerry Schuss Gallery, New York, NY; 2023 - Everyday Life, Kerry Schuss Gallery, New York, NY. Kent's first show was reviewed in The New York Times, by Roberta Smith 6/1/2023.
