[Please scroll down for German version / Für Deutsch bitte scrollen Sie nach unten] With his series Auctions, Frank Gerritz (b. 1964 in Bad Oldesloe) not only provides a biting commentary on the panorama of the art market but also addresses the way in which values are attributed to contemporary art today. Covers of catalogues from major auction houses serve as his starting point and image carrier. The choice of motifs is not random but concentrates on the big names of the modern art scene, whose works are traded at top prices, and which are downright stylised as ‘brands’. His adaptations are overpaintings in which he leaves only small sections of the depicted works free and covers everything else with black paintstick, an oil and wax crayon, in his own strictly linear manner. In contrast to the smooth, four-colour background, the manually applied lines merge to form a haptic surface structure, whereby the motifs, mass-reproduced according to the contemporary demands of advertising and marketing, are transformed back into the uniqueness of a singular work of art. In addition, the motifs are given a new appeal: visualisation through concealment. Like his entire œuvre, the works in the Auctions series are characterised by a unique blend of precision, geometry and visual intensity. Frank Gerritz is a sculptor – even beyond the classical, sculptural medium. The sculptural approach is also evident when he draws with paintstick on aluminium or with graphite pencils on paper, MDF panels or the wall. Through a striking reduction to geometric forms and clearly structured surfaces, he creates spaces of unimagined depth. Frank Gerritz is one of the outstanding representatives of contemporary German art. His works can be found in numerous international private collections and museums, such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Weserburg in Bremen, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag (Netherlands), the Musée Tavet Delacour (France), the Fogg Art Museum (UK), the Collezione Panza di Biumo (Italy), the National Gallery of Art, the Menil Collection and the Brooklyn Museum (USA). In our exhibition Auctions, named after the series of works, we are presenting a selection of works created since 2009. ***** Frank Gerritz (b. 1964 in Bad Oldesloe) liefert mit seiner Werkserie Auctions nicht nur einen beißenden Kommentar zum Panorama des Kunstmarktes, sondern thematisiert auch, auf welche Weise zeitgenössischer Kunst heute Werte zugeschrieben werden. Cover von Katalogen großer Auktionshäuser dienen ihm als Ausgangspunkt und Bildträger. Die Auswahl der Motive ist dabei nicht zufällig, sondern konzentriert sich auf jene großen Namen der modernen Kunstszene, deren Werke zu Höchstpreisen gehandelt werden und die regelrecht zu „Brands“ stilisiert werden. Seine Bearbeitungen sind Übermalungen, bei denen er lediglich kleine Ausschnitte der abgebildeten Werke frei lässt und alles Übrige mit schwarzem Paintstick, einem Öl-/Wachsstift, in der ihm eigenen, streng linearen Weise verdeckt. In Kontrast zum glatten, vier-farbigen Untergrund fügen sich die manuell aufgetragenen Linien zu einer haptischen Oberflächenstruktur zusammen, wobei die nach den zeitgemäßen Ansprüchen der Werbung und des Marketings massenreproduzierten Motive zurück in das Unikat eines singulären Kunstwerkes überführt werden. Darüber hinaus erhalten die Motive einen neuen Reiz: Sichtbarmachen durch Verhüllung. Die Werke der Serie Auctions sind wie sein gesamtes Werk von einer einzigartigen Mischung aus Präzision, Geometrie und visueller Intensität geprägt. Frank Gerritz ist Bildhauer – auch über das klassische, plastische Medium hinaus. Der bildhauerische Ansatz zeigt sich ebenso, wenn er mit Paintstick auf Aluminium oder mit Graphitstiften auf Papier, MDF-Platten oder der Wand zeichnet. Durch eine markante Reduktion auf geometrische Formen und klar strukturierte Oberflächen schafft er Räumlichkeiten von ungeahnter Tiefe. Frank Gerritz zählt zu den herausragenden Vertretern deutscher Gegenwartskunst. Seine Werke sind in zahlreichen internationalen Privatsammlungen und Museen zu finden, wie in der Hamburger Kunsthalle und der Weserburg in Bremen, dem Kunstmuseum Den Haag (Niederlande), dem Musée Tavet Delacour (Frankreich), dem Fogg Art Museum (UK), der Collezione Panza di Biumo (Italien), der National Gallery of Art, der Menil Collection und dem Brooklyn Museum (USA). In unserer nach der Werkserie benannten Ausstellung Auctions präsentieren wir eine Auswahl an Werken, die seit 2009 entstanden sind. Zur Eröffnung am 13. Juni 2025 von 18 bis 20 Uhr laden wir herzlich in die Räume in der Niebuhrstraße 5 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ein.
