Observe the Absurd Show

Sitting Room is proud to present Observe the Absurd Show a show of new paintings by Cyril Mazard. The goal of my paintings is the observation of human nature and its side effects on its nature and nature as well. My paintings and my drawings focus on natural figuration, a mix of raw classism meets surrealist impressionism. my friends defined it at: Cyrilism and for bigger laughs as: French Depressionism. My drawing style is mostly cartoonish focused on the ironic, surrealist, poetic, philosophic, politic, ecologic, catastrophic, etc… The figurative style is part of a long tradition that goes back to as far the cave paintings in Lascaux, France. Compared to 20th century abstract art which is the control of thought thru emptiness, more precisely: Abstraction is mind control. All recognizable benchmarks disappear because we can not decipher anything since it is based on nothing except the presence of colors that are all mixed up. I went thru different phase, I do not have a blue or pink or grey period per se but I have explored different themes in succession. It started with apocalypse scenery from 1995 to 2000, followed by super models imagery from 2001 to 2005, Technological progress from 2005 to 2010, Garbage landscapes from 2010 to 2012, Humoristic painting from 2012 to 2015 Nature painting from 2015 to 2018 Phone painting from 2018 to 2024 and since 2024 making new burgers out of old masters. Nature is a divine technology compared to human technology that is materialistic which is transforming us into robotic slaves that will have lost their souls the more they take selfies of themselves. In my paintings, progress is another word for sabotage and the past is idealized and sourly missed. I was hoping for a present based on balance and commonsense, basically on what is really necessary compared to sci-fi lifestyles gone mad and betrayed populations who accept it as the norm to go forward. My paintings are visual meditations that go against most of everything progress wants to sell us. A progress saturated with polluted information for the thought process, where the people digest the info-burger and the freedom fries without doubt of the results. The ultimate goal is to make you smile and to insult you in the most polite, direct and acceptable way possible. If I am and was deeply against abstraction that inundated the Art scene for the last 120 years, I am noticing that the situation has changed in the last 10 years. Many young and upcoming artists must have been bored to paint “whatever” close to almost nothing because painting nothing might be fine but painting a mountain is better and to paint a sunset is even harder. The invading visual abstraction is being replaced by a comeback of Nature in Painting by the boredom of the “New” who destroys more then it creates. Nature might be abstract, but her abstraction has integrity, a reason to be, millions of years of existence to prove it. The visual abstraction of the last 120 years was just the background of a dream or a nightmare without the presence of a somebody. And if this somebody still exist let us hope, that this somebody is not its contrary.
