Memory of a Rock
Patrick PainterPatrick Painter Inc. is pleased to present “Memory of a Rock”, a solo exhibition featuring new paintings by Los Angeles Artist Carlson Hatton. This exhibition features motifs of minimalist markings that run throughout the pieces gathering in large groupings of re-worked mono-prints. His nocturnal scenes contain figures within a color infused forested environment. Eyes and hands lurk, oscillating between plant, animal and human forms. Hatton focuses on the complexity of relationships and amplification by exposing multiple perspectives. The compositions reveal symbolism, dramatic gestures, and spirituality intertwined with pop culture. Carlson Hatton was inspired by an ad featuring a group of yacht-going singles and couples modeling the season’s cruise fashion. In his work, “The Gathering”, the painting departs from its commercial origins, as the faces are at times portrayed as swipes of paint with a haunting quality to the figures. The figures ban together in unity; clear sides are chosen in climates similar to mainstream political divisions. Hatton lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his BFA from the Cooper Union in New York City, and completed his post-graduate studies at De Ateliers in Amsterdam and The Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, the Netherlands. This is his third solo exhibition at Patrick Painter Inc. in Santa Monica. He has exhibited recently at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, CA. Hatton is also working on a public installation of ten twenty-foot murals for the Hyde Park Metro Station in Los Angeles. He is a professor at Santa Monica College where he serves as the head of the Drawing Department.
