Bienvenu Steinberg & CNadia Coen, Michael David, Paul Michael Graves, Mahmoud Hamadani, Andrew Huston, Bodo Korsig, Armita Raafat, Alyse Rosner, Steven Salzman, Margaret Weber, Mark Williams Bienvenu Steinberg & C is pleased to present Time and Materials. The exhibition title, drawn from the building trades, assembles the work of 11 artists who either exploit non-traditional materials or create innovative visual representations of time-related phenomena. In the world of construction, time and materials contracts are frequently used for projects that are uncertain in scope or that might require the ability to make changes as the work proceeds. A similar makeshift spirit pervades the practice of many of the artists in the show. They use a wide range of materials from plastic drinking straws, broken mirrors, cardboard boxes and raw pigments, to paints used to replicate precious metals. Distinctions between high and low, between the precious and the provisional, begin to dissolve to reveal how value is constructed and reimagined.
