Impressions of Los Angeles: 60 Years of Printmaking at Gemini G.E.L.

Additionally, at Frieze Los Angeles, Gemini presents a selection of works from renowned artists, including Tacita Dean, Frank Gehry, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Julie Mehretu, Ed Ruscha, Analia Saban and Richard Serra. Positioned together, the two presentations highlight the breadth of artists who have worked at Gemini and their distinct approaches to printmaking, shaped through close, hands-on collaboration with the publisher. Since its founding in Los Angeles in 1966, Gemini G.E.L. has been a place where artists are given the freedom to test and explore new ideas, materials, and scale, expanding the vocabulary of printmaking that continues to evolve with each generation. We’re also excited to showcase a selection of works at Frieze LA that will show collectors our history of artistic experimentation throughout the decades, as well as our commitment to female artists.” Curated by Susan Dackerman, Impressions of Los Angeles: 60 Years of Printmaking at Gemini G.E.L., is divided into two major themes: the atmosphere of Los Angeles and the streets of Los Angeles. Several of the works on view have not been shown in decades, nor have they been curated in this grouping before, offering a new perspective on Gemini’s printmaking history. Entering the light-filled gallery, visitors encounter David Hockney’s Weather Series (1973) where he showcases the atmospheric conditions Angelenos know so well: Mist, Sun, and Rain. Tacita Dean’s lithographs LA Exuberance (2016), and LA Magic Hour (2021) highlight the beauty of the light in Los Angeles, with soft, wispy clouds against a striking blue sky and a gentle, glowing sunset, respectively. Other works in this section highlight what makes Los Angeles, Los Angeles, including palm trees, as depicted in Claes Oldenburg’s Sneaker Lace in Landscape series (1991); the ocean in Vija Celmins’ Drypoint–Ocean Surface–2nd State (1985); and the shores of the Pacific in Roy Lichtenstein’s Nude on a Beach (1978). The works in the second gallery, in a building designed by Frank Gehry in 1976-79, highlight street life in Los Angeles and are inspired by the buildings and sights of the city. Selected works include Ed Ruscha’s Pico and Sepulveda (2001), a screenprint of a major intersection in West LA, and Robert Rauschenberg’s iconic LA Uncovered series (1998) that depict the city through a kaleidoscope of images. This section also features two House Studies (2016) by Frank Gehry, a longtime collaborator with Gemini and the architect of the building in which these works are shown. Two of Elizabeth Murray’s unique works from her Sweetzer Suite series (2006) are vibrant colored 3-D assemblages of foam, inspired by the colors and shapes of the city. “I’ve been familiar with Gemini G.E.L. for more than thirty years now, having met co-founder Sidney Felsen at the print fairs held at the Baltimore Museum of Art,” said curator Susan Dackerman. “Gemini always had, and still has, engaging, experimental work by some of the best artists of our time. In curating this exhibition, my goal is for people to recognize Gemini’s longstanding connection with artists and its place in Los Angeles.
