After growing up between the countryside and Paris, she got her BA from the National Fine Art School of Paris, then studied at Hunter College School of Fine Art in New York and finally graduated from her MFA at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam. She now lives and works between Brussels and Paris. Sophie Varin’s paintings and sculptures focus on our relation to reality, and how it often means a negotiation between what you would like to see, and what you would like to hide. Depicting seemingly banal situations, her works create ambiguous scenarios where apparent familiarity shows a twisted face. Very interested in abilities to adapt and mimicry techniques, she likes to think of her subject’s capacity to understand -or fail to- its context. Her works give a great importance to the gaze of the observer, the witness, the public. Especially how curiosity, desire or fantasy have the ability to modulate what is seen. This distorted gaze, too thirsty to remain rational, is projecting so many blurred scenarios onto the real. Aside from her painter and sculptor’s practice, she writes detective stories starring a fictional persona; J.P Gutti. Among others, she has had recent solo exhibitions at Fortnight Institute (New York City), 12.26 West (Los Angeles), Brooke Benington (London) and with feeelings in Brussels. Ni Bien Ni Mal is the Sophie Varin's first solo exhibition in Paris in a gallery. ***** Sophie Varin est née en France en 1993. Après avoir grandi entre la campagne et Paris, elle obtient son DNAP à l’ecole nationale superieure des beaux arts de Paris, puis un MFA au Piet Zwart Institute a Paris. Elle travaille entre Bruxelles et Paris. Les peintures et sculptures de Sophie Varin se concentrent sur notre rapport à la réalité, et comment il demande souvent une négociation entre ce que l’on voudrait voir et ce que l’on voudrait cacher. Dépeignant des situations d’apparence banale, ses oeuvres créent d’ambigus scénarios où la familiarité montre un profil tordu. Très intéressée par la capacité d’adaptation et au mimétisme, elle aime penser à notre façon de comprendre (ou non) notre contexte. Son travail accorde une grande importante au regard de l’observateur.trice, au témoin, au public. Particulièrement comment la curiosité, le désir ou le fantasme ont la capacité de moduler ce qui est vu. Ce regard distordu, trop assoiffé pour rester rationnel projette sur le réel autant de scénarios brouillés. A côté de son travail de peinture et de sculpture, elle écrit des nouvelles détectives pour le personnage fictionnel de J.P Gutti. Elle a récemment présenté des expositions personnelles à Fortnight Institute (New York City), 12.26 West (Los Angeles), Brooke Benington (London) et avec feeelings à Bruxelles. Ni Bien Ni Mal est la première exposition personnelle de Sophie Varin en galerie à Paris.
