Three New Paintings

George Adams Gallery

1 July – 15 August 2026

George Adams Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new oil paintings by Maya Brodsky. This, her second solo with the gallery, features three small-scale paintings: two relating to the birth of her son, continuing the theme of motherhood from her previous exhibition, and an intricately detailed view of a room seen through a window’s lace curtain. “Sam and I,” 2025, depicts the relationship between the artist and her infant son, who is shown from behind with only his head of hair, with the artist seen in profile. Set in a winter landscape, this small – 3 ½ x 6 inches – panel captures the developing intimacy of a mother’s bond. “Sam, Birthday,” 2025, is larger – 11x18 inches, and here Sam is seen from the point of view of his mother, who has given birth moments before. The view here is more clinical: one arm cradles the tiny baby who rests to the side; implicitly, the bonding has only just begun. “Window at Cuttyhunk, Sunset,” 2026, the largest of the three at 18x14 inches, is a view through a window from the outside. The interior, seen through a sheer fabric and wire screen, is dark and mysterious, but gives way to a view out a second window on the other side of the room, of the sunlit shore and ocean. Emotionally charged, the scene has a haunting, almost elegiac quality prompted by the barely noticeable reflection of the artist’s hair in the exterior window’s glass. Maya Brodsky (b. 1984, Minsk, Belarus) was raised in Brookline, Massachusetts. She received a BFA in painting and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2008. In 2010, she graduated with an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, where she was awarded a Post-Graduate Fellowship for 2010-11. She was the recipient of an Acadia Foundation Artist’s Residency in 2013, an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2014 and 2018, and a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant in 2022. She currently lives and works in Cambridge, MA.
