A Bridge to Goodbye
D. D. D. D.D. D. D. D. is pleased to present A Bridge to Goodbye, Taylor Spong’s debut exhibition with the gallery. A Bridge to Goodbye presents two large works on canvas, created in a pre-war building only a short drive from here in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Rooted in a two decade study of design and construction, and prompted by Spong’s fascination with structural history, these artworks sample and conserve layers of human adornment: coats and coats of paint upon century-old floors. Embodying elements of both print and sculpture, the surfaces of Spong’s tableaux are built from layers of paint drawn from the hardwood planks of his studio. Treated with a layer of paint and then strewn with found materials, the floor is covered in canvas. Once dry, the fabric is peeled away, bringing with it a stratum of paint and lacquer that date back to the building’s naissance. Swaths of color once buried are revealed, disclosing decades of repair and embellishment. The viewer is allowed to experience time inverted: the oldest gestures are exposed while the most recent are concealed. Elsewhere in Spong’s art practice, one finds readymade works made of ceiling tiles, drywall, and outlet covers. The overlooked quotidian is excavated, saved, and celebrated. In his work as a designer and tailor, garments are made with precision and worn continuously, mended as needed. Present across the artist’s pursuits is a dedication to conservation and quality. Yet hand in hand with these values rests an inevitable truth––that nothing, no matter how well-made or carefully preserved, lasts forever. A Bridge to Goodbye offers a material language to the passing of time, evidencing the futile and beautiful human urge to restore our world despite its building entropy. —Maria Owen Taylor Spong (b. 1990, San Diego, CA) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Spong received his BFA from Pratt Institute. His work was previously exhibited in Sacrament Gallery (New York, NY) in 2025 and in Friend of a Friend, curated by TIFXB in 2024. His clothing and furniture brand, AGES, was founded in 2023.
