IbidFor a viewer faced with a painted wall, the outermost surface of Maria Taniguchi’s untitled paintings appears almost depthless: thousands of assiduously painted bricks are sealed flat by its medium, combined to form an immense presence whose weight is merely canvas. Concerned with the agency of painting as a conceptual apparatus in a constellation of work that includes video, installation, and sculpture, the brick paintings might be seen as an encapsulating device – a synopsis of thinking, or a nervous system of sorts. Maria Taniguchi was born in 1981 in Dumaguete City, the Philippines. She received her MFA at Goldsmiths, London. She currently is included in the exhibition Anarchéologie at Centre Pompidou, Paris. Recent solo exhibitions include Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo; Silverlens, Manila; Things That Can Happen, Hong Kong; carlier | gebauer, Berlin; and Ibid Gallery, London. She was the recipient of the 2015 Hugo Boss Asia Art Prize. Taniguchi currently lives and works in Manila.
