Room to Spare
Charles MoffettMegan Mulrooney is pleased to present Room to Spare, an offsite exhibition by Grace Bromley at Charles Moffett in New York. The presentation marks the first time the gallery has hosted an external program in the space and opens concurrently with an exhibition by Julia Jo. Rendered at an intimate scale, no greater than a foot in either direction, Bromley’s paintings take as their subject interior architectures, from rooms and stages to apertures and curtained spaces. Drawing from Baroque theater diagrams and illusionistic stagecraft, these small works manipulate space through compression. Depth is flattened, perspective destabilized, and fixed vantage points undone. Throughout the exhibition, interiors repeat and fold back on themselves. Beds mirror stages, arches resemble prosceniums, and walls function like backdrops, suggesting that domestic space, like theater, is a site where roles are rehearsed, concealed, and occasionally abandoned. Grace Bromley (b. 1994, Park Ridge, IL; lives and works in Richmond, VA) holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. She has had a solo exhibition at Megan Mulrooney, Los Angeles, and her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Zepster, New York, NY; Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston, MA; Jack Barrett Gallery, New York, NY; Mariam Cramer Projects, Amsterdam, NL; LBF Contemporary London, UK; D.D.D.D. Pictures, New York, NY; among others.
