Or mixing them with elements and impressions alien to nature." - Cristina Iglesias Konrad Fischer Galerie Berlin is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by Cristina Iglesias. Iglesias' sculptures and installations relate to elements of nature, but also to the ornamental – in particular the moorish influences on Spanish culture. The delineation of space and exploration of spatial situations is equally significant for her work. The central installation of the exhibition „Phreatic Zone I“ blurs the boundaries between outside and inside space, with the paving from the street outside continuing into the gallery. The ground opens up to reveal a 'phreatic zone' – an obscure natural structure beneath the surface, where water flows and a landscape emerges from twisted root-like forms. The motif of the phreatic zone continues in a further two works shown on the first floor of the gallery from the series 'Pozo' (Well). Iglesias' photographic works move between sculpture and painting. She builds architectural models as studies and photographs them. These images are worked on in multiple layers and stages, using various techniques including drawing, collage, and painting. The images are then screen-printed onto metal or silk, and sometimes altered again by painting onto the screenprint. These works show studies around big scale public sculptures such as the one for the Souk in Beirut, for 'Tres Aguas' in Toledo, the sculptural intervention in the garden of the Centro Botin in Santander, or the large outdoor sculpture for the new Bloomberg headquarters in London. Cristina Iglesias, born in November 1956 in San Sebastián, has shown solo exhibitions internationally, including in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1998), Whitechapel Art Gallery in London (2003), Museum Ludwig in Köln (2006), Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid (2013) and the Musée de Grenoble (2016). She represented Spain in the Venice Biennales of 1986 and 1993. Larger architectural works include 'Deep Fountain', in front of the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen (2006), the bronze gates of the new wing of the Prado Museum in Madrid (2007), and the underwater sculpture 'Estancias Sumergidas' in the Gulf of Mexico (2009) on the occasion of the opening of the nature reserve Espiritu Santo. For the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid Iglesias developed 'A Place of Silent Storms (Arthur C. Clarke)' (2017). In 1999 she was awarded the Spanish National Prize for Visual Arts and in 2012 the Berliner Kunstpreis. Iglesias Skulpturen und Installationen nehmen Bezug sowohl auf Motive der Natur als auch der Ornamentik, insbesondere der maurischen Einflüsse auf die spanischen Kultur. Das Schaffen von Räumen und das Erkunden von Raum-Situationen stehen im Mittelpunkt ihres Werkes. Die zentrale Installation der Ausstellung „Phreatic Zone I“ hebt die Grenzen zwischen Außen- und Innenraum auf, das Pflaster des Bürgersteigs wird im Innenraum der Galerie fortgeführt. Der Boden öffnet den Blick auf die Sättigungszone – eine obskure natürliche Struktur unterhalb der Oberfläche, aus verschlungenem Wurzelwerk, das von Wasser umspielt wird. Dasselbe Motiv der 'Phreatic Zone' benutzt sie in den beiden Arbeiten aus der Serie 'Pozo' (Brunnen), die wir im ersten Obergeschoss der Galerie zeigen. Iglesias Fotografien bewegen sich zwischen Malerei und Skulptur. Sie baut architektonische Modelle als Studien und fotografiert diese. Diese Bilder entstehen in verschiedenen Fertigungsprozessen und bedienen sich dabei unterschiedlicher Techniken wie Zeichnung, Collage oder Malerei. Die Bilder werden dann auf Metall oder Seide gedruckt und zum Teil durch Malerei auf dem Siebdruck verändert. Diese Arbeiten zeigen Studien für große Außenarbeiten wie für den Souk von Beirut, „Tres Aguas“ in Toledo, die skulputrale Intervention im Garten des Centro Botin in Santander oder für die große Außenarbeit für das Headquater von Bloomberg in London. Cristina Iglesias, November 1956 in San Sebastián geboren, hatte u.a. Einzelausstellungen im Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1998), in der Whitechapel Art Gallery in London (2003), im Museum Ludwig in Köln (2006), im Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid (2013) oder im Musée de Grenoble (2016). Bereits 1986 und 1993 wurde Cristina Iglesias für den spanischen Pavillon auf der Venedig Biennale ausgewählt. Große architektonische Arbeiten sind u.a. der Brunnen „Deep Fountain“ vor dem Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen (2006), die Bronzetore des Neubaus der Prado-Erweiterung in Madrid (2017) sowie die Unterwasserskulptur „Estancias Sumergidas“ im Golf von Mexiko (2009) aus Anlass der Erklärung der Insel Espiritu Santo zum Naturschutzgebiet. Für die Sir Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid entwarf sie 2017 die Arbeit „A Place of Silent Storms (Arthur C. Clarke)“. 1999 wurde sie mit dem Spanischen Nationalpreis für Bildende Kunst ausgezeichnet. 2012 erhielt sie den Großen Kunstpreis der Stadt Berlin. Cristina Iglesias lebt und arbeitet in Torredolones bei Madrid.
