To a World Full of Others
Von BarthaMarina Adams opens her first solo exhibition in Switzerland, To a World Full of Others, with thirteen new paintings and several drawings. The large-scale, radiant canvases, with titles such as Somewhere, Over the Rainbow; Cedar of Lebanon; Blue Diva; 3 Wishes for Ornette, are inspired by a manifold of themes from poems, memories, and places, to geopolitical events. The US-American artist is known for her dynamic, abstract works which explore colour, form and movement, featuring vibrantly coloured interlocking shapes and lines. Often large in scale, Adams’ practice draws inspiration from a range of subjects including architecture, ceramic and textiles, from the richly patterned rugs of Morocco to the Moorish tiles found in the Alhambra Palace in Spain. Based between New York and Parma in northern Italy, Marina Adams is known for her dynamic, abstract works which explore colour, form and movement, featuring vibrantly coloured interlocking shapes and lines. Often large in scale, Adams’ practice draws inspiration from a range of subjects including architecture, ceramic and textiles, from the richly patterned rugs of Morocco to the Moorish tiles found in the Alhambra Palace in Spain. Adams’ practice is notable for its skillful use of colour, which is combined with form to create a sense of movement and rhythm in her work. On closer inspection, large expanses of colour reveal brushstrokes and drips from the application of the paint. Solo exhibitions include The Journal Gallery, New York, NY (March 2021); Focus: Marina Adams, The Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, TX (November 2020); Anemones at Salon 94 Bowery, NYC, which was accompanied by her monograph (2019); and The Secret of Greek Grammar at Larsen Warner Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. Adams is a 2016 recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, and received the 2018 Award of Merit Medal for Painting from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. b. 1960 in Orange, New Jersey / Lives and works between NYC, Bridgehampton, NY and Parma, Italy
